Shipmates -
The registration is now open for the 2010 District Conference in Orange County, CA.  Dates for the event are 8-10 JAN 2010.  This is a great training (and social) opportunity.  It's well worth the time and expense to attend it.  Details can be found at:

Early pre-registration deadline is 20NOV09.  After that date, the registration fee increases from $20 to $40.  New members who joined the AUX in 2009 are allowed to attend for free (i.e. registration fee is $0).  There are also reduced room rates for the weekend.

Please look at your calendars now and make plans to attend this fantastic event!

Subject: ALAUX - AUXILIARY SEW-ON QUALIFICATION INSIGNIA
Date: Thu, 17 Sep 2009 14:02:42 -0400

For all, for info
1.  The Coast Guard Auxiliary sew-on qualification insignia announced in ALAUX 033/09 are authorized for wear on the Operational Dress Uniform (ODU), Working Blue, and Hot Weather Uniform (i.e. - only the Coast Guard dark blue short-sleeve shirt alternative) described in the Auxiliary Manual (Commandant Instruction M16790.1 series).

2.  In accordance with Coast Guard Uniform Regulations (Commandant Instruction M1020.6 series), only one Auxiliary sew-on qualification insignia is authorized for wear on the ODU.  By extension, this also applies for Working Blue and the Hot Weather Uniform authorized for wear by Auxiliarists.  Such insignia shall be centered directly above the "USCG AUXILIARY" cloth tape immediately above the wearer's left breast pocket.  Embroidered insignia shall be the same size as the metal insignia, centered on a tape the full width of the pocket.  The tape shall not exceed the width of the pocket.  If an Auxiliarist has earned more than one qualification insignia, then the insignia that is worn shall be at the discretion of the Auxiliarist.  Temporary/conditional sew-on qualification insignia shall not be worn on these uniforms.

3.  Pursuant to ALCOAST 074/09, the Auxiliary sew-on AUXOP device is authorized for wear on these uniforms.  It is the only Auxiliary device so authorized.  It shall be centered directly above the cloth nametape immediately above the wearer's right breast pocket.

4.  These provisions shall be incorporated into the next change to the Coast Guard Auxiliary Manual.

Subj: WEARING PPE WITH AUXILIARY MARKINGS -043/09

1.  Section 10.A.12. of the Auxiliary Manual (Commandant Instruction
M16790.1 series) states, "Auxiliaries may not wear any distinctive part of
the uniform or official Auxiliary insignia with civilian clothing."  Coast
Guard Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that is authorized for Auxiliary
use while assigned to duty and that has Auxiliary markings (e.g. - "U.S.
Coast Guard Auxiliary" displayed on the back of a Coast Guard Type III life
jacket) falls within the scope of, "...any distinctive part of the
uniform..."  Auxiliary-marked PPE, including life jackets and float coats,
are therefore only authorized for wear by Auxiliarists when in uniform and
assigned to duty.  The Auxiliary Uniform Procurement Guide has also been
changed to reflect this policy.

2. The purpose of this list is to keep Auxiliarists as well as all other
interested parties abreast of current developments, policies, manuals, etc.
All information contained herein and linked is OFFICIAL policy and
information.

3. Internet Release and Distribution is Authorized.

CG INFORMATION for AUXILIARISTS:  fm AUXLO SSD

H1N1 VIRUS

Please pass to all members asap, per request of the AUXLO, Sector San Diego.

Please discuss subject at all Flotilla meetings as Member Training; share with families.

DCDRs:  Please provide feedback to AUXULO when training has been completed by Flotillas in your Division.

Thank you for your attention to this.

 FROM   LTJG CONNER, AUXLO SSD:

With the fall drawing near and our families returning to school, the probable rise in colds and the ever present flu is eminent.   As a reminder, please take this warning to heart and remind your members, families, and crews to wash their hands, cover their mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing, and

WASH HANDS  WASH HANDS  WASH HANDS!!!

Now for the serious information. This summer we had a few Coasties that were diagnosed with H1N1 Flu as well as some of their dependants. So here is a reminder of what do if you or your shipmate comes into Sector San Diego, calls in sick for a patrol, or attends a meeting while feeling flu-like symptoms:

 1. If you are sick and are complaining of flu-like symptoms, stay home and call your health care provider for an appointment.

 2. If you are sick but it seems that you just have a virus, stay home. If your symptoms  progress, call your health care provider for an appointment.

 3. If a member of your crew calls in sick for a patrol having flu-like symptoms, ask them to stay home and contact their heath care provider for an appointment.

 4. If you, a family member, a roommate (that you live with), or a crew member, has a confirmed case of H1N1 then you/they need to stay home for 7 days. If you or they do not show signs of the flu then you/they should make an appointment with a health care provider near the end of the 7 days for an assessment screening.

5. If you, a family member, a roommate (that you live with), or a crew member does start to show symptoms, then you/they need to make an appointment with a health care provider immediately.

 4. Since AUX members attend our Flotilla, Division, and District meetings, the above advisory is of vital importance.

Conversation with the Commandant

By Manny Romero, Division Chief, Training, National Department of Public Affairs

Admiral Thad Allen meeting with leaders from Auxiliary Division 10 (D11-SR)

Admiral Thad Allen meeting with leaders from
Auxiliary Division 10 (D11-SR). Included are Commodore Michael C. Johnson, District Commodore, D11-SR, Retired Rear Admiral Bob Sloncen of Wellton Arizona, and Captain Thomas Farris, Commanding Officer, U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen was here February 5 to meet with leaders from Auxiliary Division 10 (D11-SR)—whose members form the essence of the Coast Guard on Arizona’s desert lakes.

In a relaxed breakfast meeting designed to acquaint the Admiral with local personnel, the Coast Guard leader spoke of several initiatives to help align the Auxiliary with the Coast Guard modernization program.

He also expressed his favorable impression of the transition between Administrations and his early interactions with the new President and DHS Secretary (former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano.)
